People often wonder
why they did not get promoted, instead their colleague got the promotion who is
less knowledgeable and less hardworking then them. Working in various
management positions and observing people over time, I have distilled a number
of points that can help you in advancing your career. I don't like to tell a lot of stories but rather enjoy getting
straight to the point.
Here are the common traits of the candidates that win.
Practicing the habits that get you promoted aren’t easy but don't get disheartened, learn and practice the following points. Work on each of the points, expand on them and write down your plan to practice them (less than a page per point). Review your plan every month to monitor your progress.
1. What is the boss looking for? Put yourself in the shoes of the boss. Make him look good in front of his boss and his colleagues.
2. Demonstrate excellence - all the time. Make a list of things that show excellence in your team and follow them.
3. Help your colleagues but make sure that the boss knows it (indirectly if possible).
4. Practice good communication. Keep the information flowing with colleagues boss and related departments and organizations on everything – set up information sessions.
5. Suggest ideas to raise the profile of your team - get more work from other departments, communicate outside of your group.
6. Let your boss know that you want to be promoted. Ask him how you can increase your chances for a promotion.
7. Politics in the workplace is inevitable – Learn it and use it to your advantage.
8. Demonstrate stark honesty. Always. But don’t lose your human touch.
9. Shmooze – Learn to be interested in people and learn to listen.
10. Take chances. Calculated risks by taking attention-getting assignments will help you to be noticed.
Hal Lancaster writes in his book Promoting Yourself*, “…attention getting assignments, powerful sponsors and plain old luck will propel you to the top...”
Write your plan and send it to me if you need feedback and opinion.
Good Luck
